Former President Barack Obama and former first lady Michelle Obama sparked divorce rumors when the couple arrived separately at the "Profiles in Courage" award ceremony in Boston.
Amid reports of the former president's previous relationships detailed in a new book, as well as recent instances of the couple traveling separately, many have speculated the pair is separated and heading for divorce.
The former president was spotted visibly upset when he arrived at the awards show without his wife, according to Mad World News. Despite the reports, the pair was together during the ceremony and Barack thanked Michelle during his acceptance speech.
"I also want to thank Michelle Obama for after the presidency sticking with me because I think she felt an obligation to the country to stay on," he told the crowd, People Politics reported. "But once her official duties were over, it wasn't clear."
"I love my wife. And I’m grateful for her," he added. "And I do believe that it was America’s great good fortune to have her as first lady."
Many readers offered theories as to why the couple seemed to be traveling separately in the months since leaving office.
"So I think they are playing this as a game to get people to forget about all the damaging thing these two moron did to Amaerica and Americans for the last 8+Years," one Mad World News reader commented on the site's Facebook page. "Like really stole money, Muslim prayer, have money to country that didn't need it. Promised country's stuff. Like really they belong in prison not to be felt sorry for. She had to know. Things like that can't be hidden for that long with out a hint."
Some expressed sympathy for Michelle in response to previous reports of his sexual exploits before the two were married.
"I do not like Michelle nor her no good husband but I do feel sympathy for her," one reader commented. "I am sure she knew about his playing around and he disrespected her very much. But out of her mouth came she does not like the US of A. I would dump that fool in a heart beat. Life is all we get. Make it a good one."
Others called for people to leave the couple alone because they're no longer in office.
"I don't like Obama but unless you are in their bedroom, you really don't know what goes on," one reader wrote. "Stop trying to sound like you are the authority on The Obama's marriage. You don't know how much it pains me to say that, but it is true."
