One 17-month-old pit bull became the star of the Internet after a video featuring the 173-pound dog went viral.
Hulk, the pit bull, was bred by family-owned New Hampshire-based kennel Dark Dynasty K9’s. Hulk is not a full bred, but a cross between an American bulldog and pit bull. The combination led to his massive size – the average pit bull weights 25 to 35 pounds and the average American bulldog tops out around 120 pounds.
"A dog the size of the Hulk could kill someone if it was in the wrong situation at the wrong time,” Marlon Grennan, who owns Dark Dynasty K9’s with his wife, said. “The power of this dog is unrivaled. If he bit down on someone's arm with full power it would snap like a toothpick.”
Grennan argued that Hulk isn’t aggressive and that, despite their reputation, pit bulls are gentle dogs. Grennan’s 3-year-old son has grown up with the animal always in reach, which has lead Grennan to describe the breed as a “nanny” dog.
Lisa Grennan is herself dwarfed by the massive pit bull, though she has no concerns about Hulk with her young son.
“They’re amazing family dogs,” Mrs. Grennan said. “People say these dogs randomly flip out, but that just doesn’t happen.”
The couple currently trains more than a dozen pit bulls on their 150-acre ranch. Many of the dogs eat a diet of high-protein ground beef and protein supplements like a bodybuilder. The Hulk alone eats 4 pounds of ground beef each day.
The dogs are trained to experience no fear and overcome any obstacle to protect their owners. According to Mr. Grennan, a dog like Hulk could cost anywhere from $2,500 to $25,000 – Hulk’s son will soon be sold for $30,000.
