Meet The Black And White Fraternal Twin Sisters Who Have Many Scratching Their Heads

Two sisters from the U.K. have left many baffled upon learning that the girls are actually fraternal twins.

The Daily Mail reports Lucy and Maria Aylmer are 18-year-old sisters from Gloucester, and even though they look nothing alike, the two girls are actually twins. Born in 1997, one of the sisters is clearly black while the other appears white.

“It was such a shock for her because obviously things like skin color don’t show up on scans before birth,” Lucy said of her mother’s reaction upon being handed the twins after giving birth. “So she had no idea that we were so different. When the midwife handed us both to her she was just speechless.

“No one ever believes we are twins because I am white and Maria is black,” Lucy continued. “Even when we dress alike, we still don’t even look like sisters, let alone twins. When we’ve met friends for the first time they never believe we are twins and they have even made us produce our birth certificates to prove that we are actually twins.”

The girls are both mixed race, as their father Vince is white and their mother Donna is half Jamaican, but their appearances couldn’t be any more different.

The twins say they are close, but they currently attend two different colleges and lead different lives.

“We are proud of the fact that we are each other’s twin sister,” Lucy explained. “Maria loves telling people at college that she has a white twin - and I’m very proud of having a black twin.”
