A man from Brockton, Massachusetts, accused of raping and impregnating a 12-year-old girl was ordered to be held without bail for four months after a hearing on Jan. 8, reports The Enterprise.
Elbert Richardson, 54, had appeared in court previously in December 2014, pleading not guilty to charges of indecent assault and aggravated rape of a child.
The 12-year-old victim, whose name was withheld by the Enterprise to protect her and her family's identity, told police she knew Richardson. She said that Richardson had raped her in April 2014, and then again in August, according to WCVB 5.
The girl discovered she was pregnant on the day after Thanksgiving 2014. Her mother took her to the hospital after the girl started complaining about her growing belly.
In an interview with investigators, the girl described multiple instances of sexual assault by Richardson, which started when she was 11. According to Brockton detective Erin Cummings, some of these incidents occurred where the girl's younger siblings were in the same room or even the same bed.
According to Cummings, Richardson called a family member of the victim after finding out about the pregnancy, and admitted to having sex with the girl but said he did not know if he was the father of the girl's child.
The 12-year-old eventually gave birth to a healthy baby girl during the week of Jan. 18. A man from New Bedford, Massachusetts, who is the biological father of the 12-year-old's four siblings, and who considers himself to be the girl's father, said the entire ordeal was extremely painful, but that they are grateful for the baby.
“It’s just a crazy situation and we’re trying to make the best of it,” he told The Enterprise. “We’re calling her our miracle baby. We won’t look at how she got here. We’re going to look at the fact that she’s a blessing and continue to move on.”
