A Rockville, Maryland, teenager died on the way to hospital last Friday evening after allegedly being raped by her 16-year-old ex-boyfriend.
The pair had attended a movie together and at the end the 16-year-old allegedly expressed his desire to have sex, reports said. However, the woman refused.
As they walked to their car, the boy is alleged to have ripped off her clothing and raped her against the wall of the local courthouse.
“To say that this case is shocking would be an understatement,” commented Ramon Korionoff, a spokesman for the Montgomery County State’s Attorney’s Office, according to WJLA.
The 16-year-old’s actions were caught on the courthouse's surveillance camera, and after being notified by security guards, sheriff’s deputies intervened and arrested him.
Court documents obtained by WJLA said that the suspect admitted raping the woman. He told police “he was unwilling to accept no for an answer,” and that “he was going to have intercourse regardless of his date’s objections.”
The woman was put in to an ambulance and taken to hospital, but on the way she stopped breathing. Authorities are awaiting an autopsy and toxicology report, and no cause of death has yet been given.
The 16-year-old suspect now faces a charge of second degree rape, which carries a maximum sentence of 20 years behind bars. Further charges could be brought depending on the cause of the woman’s death.
The lack of certainty over the cause of death has resulted in some speculation. Responding to suggestions that the woman committed suicide, Korionoff stated that such a view was “not necessarily concurrent with the facts as they stand,” according to WUSA 9.
“The fact that a person at 16-years-old even thinks to do that, I mean it just boggles my mind. I completely don't understand it,” Jean Arthur, a councillor, told WJLA.
Neighbors of the accused were also taken aback.
“I'm very shocked. I think that's disturbing. I would have never thought he would do something like that,” stated Felicia Charles.
“That's terrifying,” Emily Floria, a local resident, stated. “I feel so bad for the girl. She was raped on a public street and now she's dead? Wow, just wow!”
The suspect, who is being charged as an adult, is currently being held on a bond of $500,000.
