Police in Maryland are investigating the death of a 24-year-old woman at her home in Severn.
Police discovered the body of Karlyn Serane Ramirez just after 8 a.m. Tuesday. They were called to the home when a neighbor saw a stray dog walk into the unlocked property.
“Patrol officers responded to the scene and found an adult female dead inside that residence from trauma to the upper body,” said Justin Mulcahy, a spokesman for Anne Arundel County police, according to WBAL.
An autopsy later confirmed the cause of death to be gunshot wounds.
Ramirez was an Army specialist, according to her Facebook page. Police said she was stationed at Fort Meade.
Her 5-month-old baby was found unharmed by her side. Police said the infant was taken to a hospital for a precautionary check-up, but appeared to be in good health.
“It’s so sad,” neighbor Donna Johnson said. "After they brought [Ramirez's] body out, it was really sad after I found out it was a female and a baby. It’s just heart breaking."
“We were trying to figure out what happened,” neighbor Matthew Cohen added. “This is not that type of neighborhood. It’s quiet. Kids can come out and play. We really don’t have too much of ruckus going on around here, but this is a little something different.”
Officers have yet to announce a potential motive in the case or to identify a suspect.
According to police spokesman Lt. Ryan Frashure, Ramirez was married, the Capital Gazette reported. Frashure said the husband was “accessible” and “answering questions,” but he is not a suspect at this time.
Ramirez’s Facebook page showed a mother who loved her child.
“She is something else,” Ramirez commented on a picture of her baby, WBAL reported.
“Now the baby doesn’t have anybody to grow up with,” Cohen said. "This is just sad."
