A 24-year-old Maryland mother admitted to killing her two children early Sunday morning by suffocating them with plastic bags following a custody battle with one of her children’s fathers.
Police took Sonya Spoon into custody and she now faces charges of two counts of first-degree murder for the deaths of her children – 1-year-old Ayden Spoon and 3-year-old Kayla Thompson, according to the Daily Mail.
Spoon has reportedly been brought in for an emergency psychological evaluation after paramedics found her two kids unconscious in her home. Though a medical team tried to save the children at a local hospital, they died within hours of arriving.
The case is still under investigation and officials are still trying to determine why Spoon committed the crime.
According to court records reported by WTOP, Spoon had been fighting with the father of Kayla, Lester Thompson, for custody of their child for a long time.
Spoon had been granted full custody of Kayla but Thompson was allowed to spend time with her several days a week.
Spoon’s neighbors have said that the mother also recently moved in with her parents.
One of Spoon’s neighbors, Angela Pryor, said that the incident had made her worried and that it made her feel unsafe in the neighborhood, according to the Washington Post.
“You feel so safe living right across from the police,” she said. “This seems very strange for this neighborhood.”
in a statement Sunday, Prince George’s County Executive Rushern L. Baker III said that the community has been hurt by the tragic incident.
“The loss of two children that were so young tugs at our hearts. As the police investigate this horrible case, our thoughts and prayers are with the family and the people of the Cheverly community as they try to reconcile how and why this happened,” he said in the statement.
