An eight-week old adorable puppy named “Baby” is safe and sound today, but the woman who stuffed Baby in a Ziploc bag to get an allegedly amusing Facebook photo out of it is under arrest for animal cruelty.
Mary Snell, 44, and her son Britton James Engel, 21, were both busted Saturday after the sheriff’s department in Bernalillo County, New Mexico, got a tip from someone who saw the pic of Snell holding the plastic bag with the helpless puppy inside.
Engel took the picture and posted it on his Facebook page.
“They got a new puppy and were trying to show how small the dog was in comparison to a Ziploc bag . The dog was moving around and to restrict its movement. Ms. Snell thought that it would be a good idea to put the dog in the bag,” sheriff’s department Sgt. Aaron Williamson told local KOAT-TV.
Both Mom and son now face felony charges of animal cruelty.
What gave Snell the bright idea to stuff a defenseless puppy inside a freezer bag?
"She did admit it was wrong, but she couldn't get the dog to sit still, so she did it anyway," Williamson said, going on to explain why imprisonment in a plastic bag, even for a short period, is dangerous to a dog only eight weeks old. "A young puppy doesn't have the ability to move its head to a fresh supply of oxygen."
A reporter from KOAT tried to visit Snell at home but no one answered the door. A neighbor said that she and her family always appeared to treat their pets well.
