An Ohio man who killed a suspected child rapist in jail faces a six-year prison sentence and a $20,000 fine.
Zachary Butler reportedly assaulted child rape suspect David Piersol on April 5 at Tri-County Regional Jail in Mechanicsburg. Piersol died a few days later.
Butler, who was in jail at the time because he had been charged with drunk driving and resisting arrest, pleaded guilty last month to one count of reckless homicide and one count of tampering with evidence, reports WPXI. The second charge stems from reports that he traded blood-stained pants with another inmate after the assault, according to prosecutor Kevin Talebi.
Butler’s family has maintained that other inmates forced him to attack Piersol, who was in jail on rape charges involving a young girl last fall, reports Yahoo! News.
No one else has been charged in this attack. Butler’s sentencing is scheduled for Wednesday.
Update: Butler was sentenced to five years in prison and ordered to pay a $1,500 fine. He must also complete a three-year probation term after his release from prison.
