A Florida man will spend the rest of his life behind bars after he pleaded guilty to murdering and disemboweling his girlfriend while they had sex.

Fidel Lopez, 26, was sentenced Aug. 3 to life in prison without the possibility of parole.

Lopez murdered his 31-year-old girlfriend, Maria Nemeth, in September 2015 after she allegedly called out another man's name during sex.

The New York Daily News reports that he called the police himself, telling them at first that his girlfriend was having trouble breathing and had collapsed in the bathroom.

When first responders arrived they met with a gruesome scene. Lopez was covered in blood and crying next to Nemeth's lifeless body, which had been eviscerated.

Initially, Lopez told police that he and Nemeth were having consensual rough sex. He said Nemeth wanted to use beer bottles as sex toys and insisted that they continued doing so even after she began bleeding.

But Lopez later confessed to becoming a "monster" and killing Nemeth in a jealous rage after she called him by her ex-husband's name.

"She was calling me the other dude's name. She was confusing me with him," Lopez said. "If I was sober, maybe I would have just left the apartment. But I was drunk."

Nemeth reportedly passed out from intoxication when the sex was over, and that's when Lopez began sexually assaulting her with various objects, including a tequila bottle, according to WFOR.

He then used his hand to pull intestinal tissue from Nemeth's stomach before carrying her to the bathroom and splashing cold water on her face in a failed effort to revive her.

"She changed my name," he told detectives at the time. "She called me the name of the other [expletive] guy. And she said it twice and she was wrong and she was confusing me with him. At that point, I get mad. I get really, really mad."

In July, Lopez changed his not-guilty plea to guilty to avoid the possibility of the death penalty. Prior to sentencing, Lopez expressed remorse for his crime.

"Today, I’m happy to fulfill this conviction," he said through a translator. "I know that what I did has to be paid and I agree … I will pay with my life for the life I took."

Lopez added: "To Maria's family, I ask forgiveness."

Also speaking through a translator, the victim's father struggled to find words to describe his daughter.

"If I had to summarize the life of Maria, it would be very difficult to express it in a few lines," he said. "I just want to tell you all that she was and will continue to be a model of affection, effort, perseverance and love of humanity."
