A 35-year-old man from Brooklyn, New York, was sentenced on March 1 to between 27 and 32 years in jail after being convicted of beating his ex-girlfriend.
Torey Branch denied involvement in the masked beating, which resulted in Mia Jones having a miscarriage in March 2014, media reports say.
Branch was the baby’s father.
“Nothing can bring back Kennedy Victoria," Jones said in her victim’s statement, according to the New York Daily News. "I’ll never know the sound of her cry or see her first steps because of Torey Branch, he thought he was God and decided to take her away from us.”
A video showed Branch carrying out the attack, and Jones testified she recognized his voice. The couple had been together for nine years.
“Someone who can knowingly hit a pregnant woman in the stomach isn’t a man, he’s a monster. The sad part is he’s not the least bit concerned, all he’s upset about is he got caught he’s not sorry,” Jones added.
According to the New York Post, Branch’s wife, Omneisia Evans, threatened Jones in court on Feb. 16, the day Branch was convicted.
“You think it’s funny, I’m gonna come and f--- you up,” she allegedly said, the New York Post reported.
Branch researched the attack online, including 51 searches for “Can being hit in the stomach cause a miscarriage?”
“His duty as the baby’s father was to protect that child, not just when she was born but even while Mia Jones was still carrying her,” Assistant District Attorney Joanna Lettieri said in court.
The judge agreed.
“In my over 20 years working in criminal law, I never witnessed something so inhumane, cold-hearted," Justice Alexander Jeong told the court before issuing the sentence, according to the New York Daily News ."If this case doesn’t deserve the maximum sentence, I don’t know what case does.”
Branch continued to deny his involvement in the attack.
“This monster you compare me to, is not me,” he told the court.
Branch’s defense attorney confirmed his client would appeal the sentence.
“Although I cannot compare the feeling of a mother losing a child, but as a father, I was saddened by losing a child, not a day goes by that I don’t think about how beautiful Kennedy would have been,” Branch added.
