Young Man Gets 115 Years For Raping Elderly Woman

A 20-year-old man has been sentenced to life in prison for raping an 82-year-old woman.

After six days of deliberation, Brooklyn Supreme Court Justice Vincent Del Giudice sentenced Asa Robert to a maximum of 115 years in prison, reports the New York Daily News.

Robert was convicted of breaking into the elderly woman’s Brighton Beach home on July 13, 2015, and assaulting her with a knife.

The 4-foot 5-inch, 90-pound victim, who has been in a wheelchair since the attack, told jurors that she first noticed Robert sitting in her bedroom rocking chair.

She offered him a Hawaiian shirt that she purchased for her late husband, hoping that he would take it and leave without harming her. But instead he looted her apartment and then tied her up and brutally raped her for four hours, the New York Post reports.

“The defendant’s crimes in this case are almost unspeakable. I commend the victim for testifying and making sure that this defendant was held accountable for this horrific assault,” said Acting Brooklyn District Attorney Eric Gonzalez. “Today’s sentence reflects the depravity of his conduct as proven at trial and is necessary to protect the public from a clearly dangerous individual.”

Assistant District Attorney Olatokunbo Olaniyan informed the court that the elderly lady was too traumatized to give a victim impact statement in court on Jan. 10, and urged the judge to give Robert the maximum sentence, which was reportedly 122 years.

Judge Del Giudice obliged, stating: “There’s no logical reason to offer any mercy to this defendant. He showed no mercy to his victim... A woman of her age should never, never be subjected to the behavior of this defendant.” The judge based his decision on the grounds that Robert is “not able to be rehabilitated.”

Robert, who did not appear in court,  declared his innocence via a message through his attorney, Sam Karliner.
