An Oklahoma man accused of storming a food plant, decapitating one woman and stabbing another on Friday had recently attempted to convert his coworkers to Islam, several employees told police.
The suspect, 30-year-old Alton Nolen, had been recently fired from Vaughan Food Co. in Moore. He was a recent convert to Islam, Sgt. Jeremy Lewis with the Moore Police Department told a news conference Friday.
Several employees told police that Nolen attempted to convert other employees to Islam, The Oklahoman reported.
Nolen allegedly drove up to the front of the plant, hit a vehicle and then walked inside, USA Today reported. He allegedly began stabbing Colleen Hufford with a knife and “severed her head.”
Another woman, 43-year-old Traci Johnson, was also stabbed in the attack.
An off-duty sheriff’s deputy who used to own the business intervened, shooting Nolen several times with a rifle.
"This was not going to stop if he didn't stop it. It could have gotten a lot worse," Lewis told the Associated Press.
Johnson’s injuries are not thought to be life-threatening, The Oklahoman reported.
Nolen is also recovering from his gunshot wounds.
