An elderly Florida man was arrested for slashing the tires of woman who took his favorite seat at a bingo game.
Fred Smith, 82, was upset when he arrived at the Lake Ashton Retirement Community Club House in Lake Wales, Florida, on May 25 to find someone already sitting in his favorite seat for his weekly game of bingo. He was so upset he slashed the woman’s tires with an ice pick, My Fox Tampa reported.
“I didn't think anyone would be low enough to do that to my car because I didn't know I had any enemies in my life,” Ethel Britt, whose tires were slashed, said. “I thought everybody was my friend, but undoubtedly I have one enemy.”
Surveillance cameras captured the moment the bingo enthusiast seems to slash holes in the wheels of Britt’s van, a crime Lake Wales Deputy Chief Troy Schulze called “childish.”
“It's quite frankly a childish-type crime. The man admitted to it when the officer told him what he was there to investigate,” Schulze said. “He was apologetic. He said he was embarrassed. He regretted doing it, but he took ownership of it and said that even in the embarrassment he had to face consequences.”
Britt, who celebrated her 88th birthday on May 22, said there are no hard feelings, but she is still puzzled by the man’s actions.
“I'm not mad, no. I would like to have my tires paid for because that took every dime I had in the bank,” Britt said.
Smith has been charged with criminal mischief. He will likely have to pay $500 worth of damages and restitution to Britt and he has been banned from his beloved bingo hall in the retirement home.
