One suspect is dead and another has been hospitalized with gunshots to the back after a failed home invasion in Las Vegas, according to the Las Vegas Metro police. A possible third suspect could also be on the loose, police warn.
Investigators say the incident was a routine home-invasion gone terribly wrong. At least two suspects broke into the home on Monday night and bound their victims, a man and a woman. While the suspects were busy burglarizing the building, the man was able to free himself from the restraints and reach a gun.
When police responded, they found one suspect dead inside the home. The suspect's body was found lying in an entryway between the rear of the house and the backyard.
The male victim, who owns the house, claims both suspects were armed. The female victim was found hiding inside the closet.
When police arrived, the victims apparently still had duct tape on them. As of Tuesday morning, the homeowner was not going to be charged.
"I'm not sure how he was able to break free, but he was able to retrieve a firearm and shoot the suspect multiple times, " Metropolitan Police Department Lt. Dan McGrath told the Las Vegas Review-Journal.
Later, a man in his 20s sought treatment at Centennial Hills Hospital for multiple gunshot wounds to the lower back. Centennial Hills is less than two miles from the scene of the shooting. He was later transferred to the University Medical Center of Southern Nevada.
The second suspect claims he was not shot at the site of the home invasion, but police believe he was involved. The suspect drove himself to the hospital, and the car he drove was identified by a witness of the event.
The name of the deceased suspect will be released at a later time, according to the Clark County Coroner's office.
The female victim of the home invasion is also receiving medical treatment at the University Medical Center of Southern Nevada after she was struck in the arm. At this time, it is unclear whether she was hit by the male victim by accident, or by one of the two suspects.
A possible third suspect is believed to have fled the scene and police are looking for any information related to them. Investigators have not yet said whether this home invasion attempt is related to a homicide that happened nearby on the same night.
