A man set up a camera in his mother's nursing home, and soon made a shocking discovery (video below).
Camille Parent initially learned altercations had been reported between his mother and other residents of her elder care facility. Parent wanted proof for himself, so he set up a hidden camera in his mother’s room.
While reviewing the video, Parent quickly realized it wasn’t just other residents who were abusing his mother, her caretakers were as well.
Disturbing video shows the moments in which staff abused the man’s elderly mother. While one staff member can be seen blowing his nose on her sheets, another was caught physically abusing her.
“Based on what I see on the preliminary investigation, it is totally unacceptable and I will make sure that actions are taken to prevent any such abuse in the future,” the CEO of Saint Joseph’s nursing home said in a statement.
A report showed that elderly abuse occurs at 1 in 3 nursing homes in the U.S., according to ABC News
“What we have found is shocking,” Democratic Rep. Henry Waxman of California said. “Unless we are willing to pay nursing homes enough to do their job, intolerable incidents of abuse and other types of mistreatment will continue to persist.”
He noted, “The bottom line is clear: Something clearly needs to be done to improve nursing home conditions It would have been intolerable if we had found a hundred cases of abuse; it is unconscionable that we have found thousands upon thousands."
