Man Sentenced For Shooting A 2-Year-Old Girl In The Head

Raymone Jackson shot 2-year-old KaMiya Gross in the head, killing her, in front of her father at a housing complex in Inkster, Michigan, in July 2014.

KaMiya was just 10 days shy of her third birthday.

On March 5, Jackson and his co-defendant, Raphael Hearn, were each convicted of first-degree murder for the shooting, which also injured Kenneth French, KaMiya’s father, and 12-year-old Chelsea Lancaster, a family friend.

In addition to murder, Jackson, an ex-convict, was also found guilty of torture, two counts of assault with intent to murder, assault with a dangerous weapon and felon in possession of a firearm, USA Today reported.

Assistant Wayne County Prosecutor Jaimie Powell Horowitz said Hearn ordered the shootings, according to The Detroit News.

Wayne County Circuit Judge Ulysses Boykin sentenced both of them to life in prison without the possibility of parole.

“This is one of the most heinous crimes I have ever seen in my 45 years in the legal profession,” Boykin said.

Jackson said he was remorseful for his actions. He repeatedly said, "None of this was supposed to happen.” After listening to testimony from KaMiya’s parents, he said, "I want to send out my deepest apologies.”

"I'll never get over this, but it's a start ... for my daughter," Erica Gross, KaMiya’s mother, said. "For [Jackson and Hearn] to have kids of their own and to be part of something like this is terrible. I don't think they deserve to be called father."

French called Jackson a "coward" and “punk,” adding, "Do yourself a favor and kill yourself because the world is not going to miss you.”

Authorities said the shooting was retaliation for an earlier crime.
