A Kansas man was sentenced to more than 11 years in prison after he stole the wedding ring off an unconscious woman as she lay dying in her car.
Daquantrius Johnson, 21, was convicted of aggravated burglary, robbery and misdemeanor theft for robbing Danielle Zimmerman in December 2013, NY Daily News reports.
Zimmerman was picking up dinner for her family at a Taco Bell drive-through in Wichita, Kansas, when she suffered a fatal brain aneurysm. Her truck slammed into the restaurant's speaker and she lay unconscious.
According to prosecutors, Johnson and two accomplices raided the truck after the accident. Keith Hickles and Quanique Thomas-Hammen pleaded guilty to the robbery and received nine and 19 months in prison, respectively, Wichita Eagle reports.
Johnson insisted he was not involved in the crime. Police did find the woman’s purse abandoned at the side of the road, but her wedding ring is still missing.
The mother of two died in the hospital the morning after the incident. Zimmerman’s husband said in court on March 30 that Johnson “turned a tragic event into a crime of opportunity and needs to be held accountable for his actions.”
“I hope you reflect on [the] crime you committed every day while you’re in prison,” Kris Zimmerman said.
His statement continued:
“Dani didn’t deserve [to have] this to happen to her. She was a kind and compassionate person. You disrespected Dani, me and my family. You also disrespected your family. When you become a father, you have the responsibility to be a good role model. You set no example of that. I hope when you are released you become a more productive member of our society. I would think you would want your children to admire you, not be ashamed of you.”
Sedgwick County District Judge Christopher Magana ordered Johnson, who had previously been sentenced to 111 months for crimes he committed while on felony probation, to serve an additional 136 months in prison. This means Johnson could spend the next 21 years of his life behind bars.
