A man who repeatedly threw his 3-year-old stepdaughter into a swimming pool causing her to drown has been sentenced to 100 years behind bars (video below).
The man, identified only as Jose David N., was caught on surveillance footage in August 2015 in Morelia, Mexico, the Daily Mail reported.
The incident occurred when the girl’s mother was sleeping in their hotel room.
The footage shows Jose David repeatedly throwing the girl into the water, including on one occasion when she is fully clothed.
The girl can be seen reaching out for help and struggling to stay afloat. At one point, Jose David tossed in a life buoy although he knew the girl would not be able to reach it.
Other bathers are seen leaving the area. They reportedly did nothing to help the girl.
Jose David knew his stepdaughter was unable to swim. He alleged feeling surprised when he found out she had drowned. However, the video footage proved decisive in convicting him.
The prosecution asked for a 40-year sentence. But after reviewing the video, judges Juan Salvador Alonso Mejia, Ana Lilia Garcia Cardona and Noe Reyes Millan increased the man’s punishment to 100 years.
Jose David will also not be eligible for parole.
During sentencing, Judge Garcia Cardona stated that Jose David also held the girl under the water at one point by the hair and held her in a position so that she could not breathe.
The judges rejected the defense’s argument that the girl died outside the pool.
When the video was made public last year, it caused an outpouring of rage in South America.
The mother, who is a nurse, said she was not aware that her daughter was being abused. She discovered her daughter was dead only when she found her in front of the television not breathing.
She took the girl to a hospital, where the doctors confirmed the child had died. Jose David was arrested soon after.
