An Alabama man is in custody after turning himself in to police in connection with a viral video showing the sexual assault of a child.

According to CNN, 44-year-old Germaine Moore of Millbrook, Alabama, turned himself in to police outside of Montgomery on February 6 after a disturbing video went viral in which he is reportedly seen sexually assaulting a child.

The video spread on social media as users shared it in an attempt to find the man involved. Authorities believe the girl seen in the video was 6 years old at the time.

Leading authorities from several states warned after the video began spreading that sharing and possessing the video could lead to charges.

"To everyone concerned about the viral video involving the small child, PLEASE STOP SHARING IT," the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department wrote on Twitter. "Think of the child and how this will affect her. The child is safe, and the male has been identified. This is not in Indiana. Thank you all for your genuine concerns."

Authorities confirmed that the child seen in the video was found and is safe.

Moore has been charged with multiple counts of criminal sexual conduct, according to WXIN. He is accused of sexually assaulting three girls under the age of 13 from 2011 to 2017. Those girls were family members and were under his care at the time of the alleged crimes. Prosecutors said that the instances of abuse took place in both Alabama and Michigan.

"I believe we have the right person for this event," said Lt. Brooke Walker, the commander of the Alabama Internet Crimes Against Children Task Force.

Authorities are now working to determine when and where the video was taken.

According to WXIN, another Alabama man was arrested in connection with the case. Jerrell Washington, 42, was accused of sharing the video to Facebook. Police said that he was not involved in the creation of the video.

"These are the kind of cases -- where a six-year-old child is being forced to engage in sexual activity -- that gives all of us as parents nightmares," said Elmore County District Attorney Randall V. Houston.

The investigation began after the Alabama Internet Crimes Against Children Task Force and police in Montgomery, Alabama, learned that the video was being shared on social media. Authorities teamed up with the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children and Facebook to find out more information on the video.

Tips began pouring in from around the world, leading investigators to believe that the video was connected to the Montgomery, Alabama, area.

After police identified Moore as a suspect and asked the public for help locating him, he turned himself in to Millbrook Police.

Moore is being held in the Elmore County Jail.
