Man Posts Status #daydrunk Before Causing Fatal Car Accident

A 20-year-old Rhode Island man was driving under the influence and caused a fatal rollover crash.

Brandon McCrave was speeding in a Jeep Wrangler on Block Island, a popular tourist destination off the coast of the mainland, when he missed a corner and overturned the vehicle. The 17-year-old passenger and McCrave's nephew, Michael Skirvin, were thrown from the car entirely and died at the scene, according to The Providence Journal. The two other passengers survived, but it is unclear whether they sustained any injuries. McCrave was under the influence and was arrested for drunk driving, driving on a suspended license, and driving to endanger.

Hours before the crash, McCrave posted a status on Facebook reading: "Off to block island #daydrunk #squad."

This was McCrave's second DUI in five years, according to The Journal.

"[Michael] and his uncle were like brothers," said McCrave's father, Stephen, to WJAR. "They were only about two years apart. So he was a great kid, and for this to happen is just a horrible, horrific tragedy."

McCrave's father defended his son's actions, but also accepted the reality that Brandon will probably face jail time.

"They were being kids. Kids are kids. Hopefully, they'll give [Brandon] some type of counseling in prison, because he needs to talk to somebody,” said Stephen.

The 20-year-old also posted a number of memes on his Facebook page condoning heavy drinking. Many refer to blacking out while drunk and neglecting responsibilities in order to drink. One, in particular, seems to hint at running from the law, reading, "It's all fun and games until the cops get called...Then it's hide and seek."

"He's going to have to exonerate himself," said Stephen, reports WJAR. "And he's going to have to deal with the fact that his nephew is dead."
