Wilkinsburg, Pennsylvania cops shot and killed a man on Jan. 31 after he stabbed a police dog to death.

It all started when Port Authority officers saw a man and his adult son drinking alcohol on Jan. 31 at the Wood Street gazebo in Wilkinsburg near the Martin Luther King Jr. East Busway, reports WTAE.

Bruce Kelley Jr., 37, and his father Bruce Kelley Sr., 60, who are both believed to be homeless, got into an argument with police after being asked for identification.

Kelley Jr. walked away and then ran toward a male officer, according to the Associated Press.

According to police, the officer tried to use pepper spray on the 37-year-old, but stopped after he saw the man armed with a 14-inch folding knife.

When a female officer tried to grab Kelley Jr., his father purportedly hit her in the face.

Kelley Sr. was charged with possession of brass knuckles, according to the complaint, though it was unclear if he used them on an officer.

When Port Authority officers used a Taser on Kelley Jr., it proved ineffective due to the man wearing numerous layers of clothes.

A third officer reached the scene with his 5-year-old K-9 partner, a German Shepherd named Aren.

The German Shepherd was fatally stabbed in the head by the Kelley Jr., which led to authorities shooting him multiple times until he died from gunshot wounds to the upper chest, a spokesperson for the Allegheny County Medical Examiner's office told Daily Mail.

"At that time, they released the dog on the man, and he had a knife, and he stabbed the dog," Allegheny County Police Superintendent Charles Moffatt said. "The dog went down, and the officers shot and killed the man."

The Kelly Sr. was detained and charged with aggravated assault and other crimes.

“Aren was not wearing a vest at the time of this incident. However, a vest would not have helped as he suffered a fatal head wound,” Port Authority spokesman Adam Brandolph told Daily Mail.

There is a tentatively scheduled memorial service for Aren the police dog on Feb. 4 at the Law Enforcement Officers Memorial on Pittsburgh’s North Shore.

Aren’s death was the second fatal K-9 stabbing in the county within two years, according to AP.

On Jan. 30, a Pittsburgh K-9 dog named Rocco died after being stabbed by a burglary suspect – he was convicted and sentenced to more than 17 years in prison.

Rocco's death incited state lawmakers to increase the maximum sentence for killing a police animal from seven to 10 years.
