A 24-year-old man was shot and killed at a mall in New Orleans while shopping for his mother’s Christmas present on Christmas Eve.
According to reports, 24-year-old James Vaughan was shopping at Oakwood Center Mall in Gretna, Louisiana, when 25-year-old Gary M Francois allegedly opened fire on him as he turned away from a cash register. Police say that nobody else was injured in the shooting.
“We were in the mall purchasing the iPhone 6 for my niece, then you heard the shots,” witness Glenda Hulbert said. “Everybody wants to be with their families for Christmas. It's sad, it makes me want to cry.”
“I've seen a lot of people running and policeman coming in like it was in Cambodia or something, like a war,” shopper Paul Horton said of the shooting incident. “Stopped me from getting a few things for my loved ones.”
Police say that Vaughan was at a Foot Locker store purchasing a gift when the shooting happened.
“[The victim] had turned away from the cash register and started walking away, when the perpetrator walked up to about 3 to 4 feet from him,” Sheriff Newell Normand said. “We believe at this point in time there were three shots fired.”
The suspect is now in police custody.
