A truck exploded in the North Hollywood area of Los Angeles because a man wanted to get high on propane while also charging his cell phone, the L.A. Times reports.
The man had plugged his cellphone into the charger of the cab while he began huffing propane inside. The truck soon exploded, shattering windows and causing sounds that echoed throughout the neighborhood, terrifying its residents.
The man, who suffered burn injuries to his scalp and face, turned himself in to the Los Angeles Police Department’s North Hollywood substation, explaining the reason that the truck exploded. Some propane had apparently leaked from a tank inside the cab of the car while he was huffing it and it was ignited by the active electrical outlet.
He reportedly walked to a nearby lawn after enduring the explosion, and the truck was discovered with much confusion as to the source of the explosion.
“This guy is the luckiest guy in the world. You can’t make this stuff up,” police Sgt. Glenn McNeil commented on the incident.
The man was not arrested and refused medical treatment.
The investigation of the case continues, and the man has been allowed to return home. While the law enforcement authorities are considering other options, Los Angeles Fire Department spokesman Capt. Jaime Moore believes that the man’s stories could be plausible.
“You got fuel, the right quanity of oxygen and an ignition source. Propane is a dangerous gas,” Moore told the L.A. Times.
The man’s ownership of the truck or his reason for being inside and huffing propane is still not clear, but police continue their investigations with the new information.
No one else was injured in the incident.
