Colorado Family Finds Pot In Rental Car After Traveling Across Two State Lines

A Colorado family took a road trip across the country in a rental car. When they got back, they realized they had been traveling with marijuana stashed in the backseat the entire time.

Doug Moxon told CBS4 that he found 3.5 grams of marijuana hidden in the backseat pocket of a car he rented in Denver last weekend. He had reportedly driven through Kansas and into Missouri for a wedding and was unaware of the pot until the end of the trip.

“This was like someone leaving a loaded gun in the car for an 8-year-old to find,” Moxon said.

Moxon added that he saw six police cars conducting traffic stops on the way back.

“I just trusted the rental company to give us a safe car,” he said. “And we almost got pulled over, came close to being pulled over by a Missouri State Police car.”

He reported his findings to the rental car company and was issued a full refund.

“The branch manager was pretty upset about it,” Moxon said.

Moxon declined to identify the rental car company but hopes to see changes in policy at all rental agencies in Colorado. He said if he were stopped, he’d be the one facing fines and possibly prison time.

“The driver is the liable party, he is in control of what is in the car,” Moxon said.

According to CBS4, pot is frequently found inside rental cars at Colorado agencies. Employees said they throw away any marijuana they find.
