Clifford Taylor, a 51-year-old Ohio man who recently admitted to and was convicted of raping a 5-year-old girl, blamed the victim for his crime during sentencing on November 12th.
Taylor originally admitted in court that he bribed the child with pudding pops if she performed oral sex on him, but later changed his story, saying that the girl initiated the act herself.
“I don’t even remember what I told you. But it wasn’t true,” Clifford said at his sentencing. “The lie was that I put my penis in her mouth for Pudding Pops. My penis did get into her mouth, but I didn’t put it there. She put it there. She grabbed me. She was experimenting. I was drunk and realized it too late.”
According to the News-Herald, Taylor claimed that he was forced to lie about what he had previously admitted by his attorney, Public Defender James Mathews, in an effort to get a plea deal.
“I need to rescind the plea deal,” Taylor said to Judge Eugene Lucci. “I was not told the truth by my attorney. He threatened me.”
“I was threatened with mental incompetence. He threatened me, saying there was some reason I wasn’t thinking properly," Taylor said. ““I am not a monster like everybody is making me out to me.”
Lucci ultimately sentenced Taylor to two years more than was originally recommended, later commenting on his effort to change his story.
“There was not a scintilla of remorse,” Lucci said. “Even in court he blamed the victim for taking his penis in her mouth as a form of experimentation. At the age of 5!”
Mathews requested that he be excused from representing Taylor at any future hearings. Taylor has been sentenced to 22 years in prison for the crime, and was also deemed a sex offender for life.
