Towing Company Charges Man Nearly $50,000 After Removing His Jeep From A Mud Pit (Photo)

A Massachusetts man was reportedly charged nearly $50,000 to get his Jeep out of a mud pit.

Joel Ramer said he took his jeep off-roading with his girlfriend in Walpole, Massachusetts, the week of Oct. 19, and it landed in a mud pit, My Fox Boston reported.

Walpole police and Assured Collision towing company responded to the scene. It took them a total of 12 hours to pull Ramer’s SUV out of the mud pit.

“When I went to pick up the vehicle from Assured Collision, he'd informed me there was some damage done to the vehicle, but didn't get into details,” Ramer told My Fox Boston. “He also informed me the bill was $48,000. I thought they made a mistake.”

On top of the whopping bill, Ramer was arrested and cited for trespassing and disturbing the peace. He said he was unknowingly off-roading on private property that belonged to a utility company.

Ramer added that his Jeep is totaled after the incident.

“Frame is broken, leaf spring is broken, drive shaft is broken,” he said.

According to the itemized bill submitted to Ramer’s insurance, Assured Collision charged him $16,000 for an on-scene supervisor at $1,250 an hour, $10,000 for an off-road recovery incident response unit, and a $5,000 fee for dangerous condition liability insurance. Altogether, the bill came out to a total of $48,835 for the 12-hour job.

The owner of Assured Collision said that his seven man team was exposed to dangerous conditions due to their proximity to power lines during the job. He noted that all the fees reflect the industry standard and added that they are negotiating with Ramer’s insurance company in regards to damage done to the vehicle.

Ramer said his insurance will not be covering anything towards the bill and that his Jeep remains at Assured Collision.

Assured Collision's motto is, "Price is important, Satisfaction is Priceless," according to its Facebook page.
