A man was caught at Houston’s George Bush Intercontinental Airport on Wednesday after he tried to transport tamales filled with cocaine.
The 46-year-old man from El Salvador, who was traveling to New York, was taken aside for additional screening after U.S. Customs and Border Protection discovered that he was carrying 200 undeclared tamales.
The tamales “were not disclosed on the traveler’s declaration,” a release submitted by the CBP said.
Almost seven ounces worth of a white substance that tested as cocaine were revealed to be inside the nine found bags, which were tucked inside the tamales.
“This type of seizure speaks to our level of commitment in disrupting criminal activity despite the concealment method,” CBP Service Port Director Beverly Good said.
The man was later handed over to the Houston Police Department, in addition to the seized drugs.
