Police Charge Man For Taking Selfie While Driving, Causing Crash

Jordan Toner, a 29-year-old man from Hampden, Maine, took a selfie while driving and caused a car crash that resulted in multiple injuries to his seven passengers over the weekend, police say.

“Toner leaned over to take a ‘selfie’ picture with his friends, and ran off the road into a tree,” Maine State Police said in a statement, according to CBS Boston.

The incident occurred on Deering Lake Road in Orient on Saturday afternoon. Police later released an image of the damaged vehicle.

Two women were sitting in the front of the car, and they suffered the worst injuries. One had a fractured nose, while the other was taken to the hospital with suspected neck and back injuries.

Both women were treated for their injuries at Houlton Regional Hospital.

Sgt. Chadwick Fuller added that the women were not wearing seat belts, according to WCSH.

Two other male passengers suffered minor injuries, including cuts around their eyes.

The remaining three passengers appear to have escaped unhurt.

Toner is to appear in court for failure to maintain control of a motor vehicle due to distraction. A date for his hearing has yet to be announced.
