Man Allegedly Assaulted Woman With Corrosive Chemical After She Turned Down Marriage Proposal

A New Haven, Connecticut, man is wanted by police after reportedly attacking his ex-girlfriend with chemicals when she turned down a marriage proposal.

According to WVIT, 50-year-old Derek Lee Rawls is on the run and believed to be in Atlanta, Georgia, following a report on Jan. 8 to New Haven police relating to an assault.

Police arrived at the scene to find the victim’s face, neck, arms and chest discolored and peeling. She was taken to a nearby hospital, where she was treated for her injuries.

The woman told police that she and Rawls had dated in the past, and she had a restraining order against him at the time of the incident. She said she turned down a marriage proposal from him, prompting the man to throw chemicals in her face.

A cup of chemicals was found at the scene.

Rawls is a convicted felon with a criminal history that includes robbery, first-degree escape, unlawful restraint and assault convictions.

The woman was released from hospital after being treated for her injuries. Rawls was last seen driving a Champagne-colored Ford Taurus, has two tattoos -- one of which depicts his two children -- and has a scar under his right eye.
