Man Arrested For Raping A 10-Year-Old Girl - And It Gets So Much Worse

In late August, Arkansas police arrested a 20-year-old man who allegedly raped and impregnated a 10-year-old girl.

The court charged Justin Roshud Smith with three counts of rape and one count of endangering the welfare of a minor, notes the Wynne Police Department's Facebook page.

The case has shaken the small town of Wynne, Arkansas.

"I heard that she got raped and she's two months pregnant," Evette Hines told My Fox Memphis.

Detective Mike Smith said in a press release on Sept. 1 that a 10-year-old girl sought treatment at a local hospital, where medical staff found her to be pregnant, so Detective Rolland Geror, Sgt. Daniel Getchell, and Patrolman Brodi Faughn began an investigation in conjunction with the Arkansas State Police Crimes Against Children Division.

Following the investigation, officers took suspect Justin Smith into custody, where he is currently  being held on a $500,000 bail. If found guilty, Smith faces a minimum of 25 years in prison and a maximum life sentence, since the victim was younger than 14 years old.

"We believe it was more than one time," the detective told WREG. "He was charged with three counts."

This is the third child sex crime that Wynne police have investigated in the past month.

"We don't know what to attribute it to, but it's definitely a growing problem out there," said Smith.

The details of this case are difficult for investigators to process.

"Good people — most people can't fathom this type of behavior," explained the investigator. "Unfortunately, there's evil people or sick people in the world."

He urged parents to maintain open dialog with their children and to report anything suspicious to police officers.

"If someone is doing something to you but you don't think it's right, tell a counselor or go to a parent," Smith said.

The suspect first appeared before the Cross County District Court on Aug. 31 and will appear before the Cross County Circuit Court on Oct. 2 for arraignment and to enter his plea.
