A South Florida man was convicted of second-degree murder in the shooting death of his wife, who he claimed he fired at in self defense during a fight.
In August 2013, Derek Medina reportedly shot and killed his wife, Jennifer Alonso, during a fight in which she threatened him with a knife.
After the killing, 33-year-old Medina took a photo of his wife’s bleeding body and uploaded it to Facebook — stating alongside the photo that he acted in self defense and that she’d been physically abusing him for years, reports Sun Sentinel.
“He planned to execute Jen, and he executed his plan,” prosecutor Leah Klein told jurors in court. “He was angry and he wanted her dead.”
The couple began fighting in their bedroom after Medina failed to wake 27-year-old Alonso up that morning to watch a movie, reports The Associated Press. The fight later continued in the kitchen, with some of it being captured on home surveillance cameras.
Alonso, according to Medina, pulled out a large knife but he was able to disarm her. It was then that he went upstairs and retrieved a gun.
“She was trying to take me out,” he said.
According to a medical examiner, all eight shots in Alonso’s body were fired downward — indicating she had been cowering on her knees when she was killed.
