Police in North Charleston, South Carolina, have arrested the man allegedly responsible for abandoning a puppy after duct-taping her muzzle shut.
According to reports, 41-year-old William Leonard Dodson was arrested June 1, five days after Caitlyn, a 15-month-old stray chocolate Staffordshire bull terrier mix, was found in critical condition with her muzzle duct-taped shut.
Dodson has been charged with ill treatment of animals-torture, according to police spokesman Spencer Pryor.
Dr. Lucy Fuller, senior director of veterinary care at the Charleston Animal Society, described Caitlyn’s condition after she was discovered last week.
“Caitlyn is in a lot of pain, her condition is critical, and her prognosis is guarded,” Fuller said, reported the Daily Mail. “A large part of her tongue may need to be removed surgically if the tissue dies from the lack of blood flow. She may be severely disfigured, or the large amount of dead tissue may cause life-threatening complications. “
Reports note the black tape was wrapped tightly around her muzzle for nearly two days. Caitlyn reportedly showed up at a local resident’s doorstep with the tape wrapped around her mouth after neighbors say they hadn’t seen the popular stray dog in a few days.
Dodson remains in police custody as an investigation continues. He was expected to appear for a bail hearing on June 2, The Post and Courier reported.
