Benjamin Luke Burnside is accused of kidnapping his ex-girlfriend at knifepoint from her Layton, Utah, apartment on Aug. 4 and then beating her for 20 hours before she was able to escape.
“He strangled her several times, she lost consciousness several times, he used a golf club and a metal refrigerator strip to beat her; he stopped her from screaming and calling 911,” Lt. Travis Lyman told Fox 13 Now. “She said he did it because he did not want her to break up with him.”
According to charges filed in court, Burnside, 21, repeatedly told his 23-year-old victim, "I'm going to kill you" and "I have the power to kill you. I can kill you if I want."
After the woman’s ordeal, she convinced Burnside to leave with her to go pick up food. She made her escape when she pulled into the parking lot of a library, The Salt Lake Tribune reported. Burnside panicked and fled while the woman went to Layton Police Department.
Police found Burnside four days after the alleged assault — the victim claimed he was taking methamphetamine and prescription drugs.
Burnside, whose criminal record that includes domestic violence and assault, was booked into Davis County jail on first-degree felony counts of aggravated kidnapping and aggravated burglary, in addition to felony and misdemeanor drug possession charges.
