A Florida man reportedly shot himself in the face and died after police say he threatened to kill a family dog Tuesday morning.
Dennis Eugene Emery, 57, allegedly told his wife during a quarrel over a lost cigarette lighter that he had no problem shooting one of their dogs in their Pinellas Park home, reports the Tampa Bay Times. The man proved his threat was a very real one when he reportedly pulled back the gun’s hammer to cock the revolver and aimed it at the dog.
But when Emery attempted to release the hammer to get it “back to a safe position,” he had the gun pointed at his face and accidentally shot himself, Sgt. Adam Geissenberger told WFLA.com.
At first, police say they heard reports that this may have been a suicide, but have since concluded it was an accidental death. Emery was declared dead at the scene.
Emery was no stranger to Pinellas Park police. Since 2012, he had 34 run-ins with the law and has been arrested numerous times on charges such as aggravated assault, resisting arrest, leaving the scene of a crash and domestic violence.
