18-Year-Old Apologizes In Court After Having Sex With 15-Year-Old He Met On Grindr

A South Lyon, Michigan, man has been sentenced to 60 days in jail for having sex with a 15-year-old boy he met on Grindr, a social app geared toward gay men.

“I didn’t mean any harm,” Cody Hunter Swatling, 18, said in a court apology to his family, friends, and the teen, who is now 16, according to the Livingston Daily.

“I liked [the complainant] and cared about him … I wanted to introduce him to my parents," Swatling continued.

He added that he made a “terrible mistake.”

The legal age of consent in Michigan is 16, the Daily reported.

While entering his guilty plea, Swatling admitted that he and the teen had sex at least two times in January, communicated via computer, and that he had nude photos of the teen.

He will serve 60 days in the county jail, six months on electronic monitoring following his release, and three years of probation.

If Swatling successfully completes probation, he will not have a public criminal record since he was sentenced under the state’s Holmes Youthful Trainee Act.

Three other men also face charges for having sex with the teen, and their cases are pending in court. They met him in the same manner Swatling did — on Grindr.

Alex Peter Benedict, 24, is charged with accosting a child for immoral purposes, one count of third-degree criminal sexual conduct, and using a computer to communicate with another to commit a crime, according to the Livingston County Daily Press & Argus.

John Joseph Gasiorek III, 20, faces one count of fourth-degree criminal sexual conduct, and Burhan Ahmed Mian, 27, faces a charge of assault with intent to commit sexual penetration.

The interactions between the teen and the four men were reported to police by a family member of the victim. It's unclear how the relative found out about the sexual encounters.
