A Milwaukee woman, who says she was tired of feeling like a victim in her own community, was pushed to the edge when a teenage boy allegedly stole her daughter’s cellphone. The moment she finally caught up to the teen, placed him in a light chokehold and told him to straighten up was caught on video (below) and is now going viral.
The video was first posted to World Star Hip Hop and has garnered nearly 600,000 views. The attention from the viral clip also landed Latrisha Thompson on a televised news report in her hometown.
WDJT News reports Thompson regrets all the profanity she can be heard using in the video, but she said it couldn’t be helped.
“Mama bear came out,” she said in a recent interview.
Thompson said her 13-year-old daughter was waiting at a neighborhood bus stop when the boy allegedly pushed the girl to the ground and made off with her cellphone.
She filed a police report, but authorities were not necessarily hopeful they would recover the phone, so Thompson said she promised the police she would track down the suspected thief herself. She used the GPS tracking software installed on her daughter’s phone and tracked it to a nearby neighborhood.
She drove to the area with her daughter, who spotted the boy outside a McDonald’s restaurant. He was walking with a friend and Thompson said she confronted the two.
One of the boys threw the phone at her and the two ran off together.
With the phone back in her possession, Thompson said it could have ended there, but the boys, safely out of her reach, began taunting her.
When she gave chase, they split up. Thompson said she flagged down a police officer who went after one of the boys while she went after the other. Once she caught up to him, she held him, with one arm around his neck, until officers arrived.
She said, at first, she just tried to explain to the boy why she tracked him down and why she was mad at him.
“You think it’s OK to just go around victimizing the community?” she told WDJT she said to him.
But, she said, the teen was disrespectful and cursed at her and that’s when she snapped.
"Ya'll don't put your m********** hands on my mother f****** child," she can be heard yelling in the video. "It ain't m********** sweet.”
Although the boy told her he has asthma, Thompson refused to let go.
"I don't give a f*** what that f*** you got," she yells. "My child got asthma. You didn't give a f***.”
Thompson also told the boy he needed to straighten up or he was going to end up getting hurt on the streets.
“What if I had a m********** gun?” she can be heard asking him at the beginning of the video posted to World Star Hip Hop.
It was on that site that users voiced their opinions on Thompson’s decision to chase down the suspected thief. Many praised the mother, saying more people needed to stand up for themselves, and their neighborhoods.
“This is what we need, because the police cannot do it by themselves …” user iAM TiA LACHE wrote. “Like, these neighborhoods are getting bad. It's time for us to stand up for each other !!!!! We need to watch each others' back. There is no more waiting for the police, we must stand together. As a mother, I would have done the same thing. As a bystander, I would have done the same thing.”
Police arrested the boy in the video. Authorities told WDJT the suspect is 14 years old and has been arrested nine times in the last two and a half years.
