Malia Obama Reportedly Spotted At Museum Without Guards

Former first daughter Malia Obama was reportedly spotted at a major museum with a friend on Jan. 29 without any bodyguards accompanying her.

Obama, 18, was visiting the “Kerry James Marshall: Mastry” exhibit at New York City's Met Breuer museum, the contemporary branch of the Metropolitan Museum of Art, on its last day, Page Six reports.

“I didn’t see any noticeable Secret Service agents,” remarked a source. “I didn’t see any noticeable guards of any sort. If they were there, they were either far away or completely undercover. She was there just with this one friend going from art piece to art piece.”

The museum later confirmed Obama had attended the exhibit and that she did have a security detail with her.

Onlookers were stunned to run into the young woman, but reportedly stayed respectful.

“A lot of people sneaking pictures,” the source continued. “A lot of people buzzing about it. Walking around, ‘Did you see Malia? Malia Obama’s here!’ People approaching her, at least as far as I could see, to directly take a picture or ask questions or whatever, was pretty minimal.”

Many, the source said, were simply pleased to see her.

“One person said, ‘That’s Barack Obama’s daughter! I’m just happy to see her.’ That was the general sort of whatever everyone was saying, as if she was a long-lost relative,” the source added.

Although Obama allegedly was overwhelmed at one point, she still responded to the attention politely.

It's not the first time people have spotted Obama out in public since her father's presidency ended, USA Today reports. She attended an event supporting the Standing Rock Sioux Tribe's protest against the Dakota Access Pipeline on Jan. 23, delighting many.

"It was amazing to see Malia," anti-DAP activist and actor Shailene Woodley said. "To witness a human being and a woman coming into her own outside of her family and outside of the attachments that this country has on her, but someone who's willing to participate in democracy because she chooses to, because she recognizes, regardless of her last name, that if she doesn't participate in democracy, there will be no world for her future children."

It is likely there will be more public sightings in the future. Obama, who is currently on her gap year, is due to attend Harvard University in the fall.
