The Governor of Maine, who is no stranger to controversy, suggested the guillotine be reinstated so drug traffickers can be executed in public.
In a Jan. 26 radio interview on WVOM, Republican Gov. Paul LePage of Maine said increased prison sentences for drug traffickers are not enough, Politico reports.
“I think the death penalty should be appropriate for people who kill Mainers,” LePage said, according to Politico. “We should give them an injection of the stuff they sell.”
Maine is one of 19 U.S. states without capital punishment. It was officially abolished in 1887 after a poorly executed hanging.
Nevertheless, LePage continued on with other ideas to tackle the state’s drug epidemic.
“What we ought to do is bring the guillotine back,” he said. “We could have public executions and we could even have which hole it falls in.”
LePage made national headlines earlier in January over racist remarks about drug dealers and with whom they interact.
“These are guys with the name D-Money, Smoothie, Shifty -- these types of guys, they come from Connecticut and New York, they come up here, they sell their heroin, they go back home,” LePage said at a town hall meeting on Jan 7, according to MSNBC.
“Incidentally, half the time they impregnate a young white girl before they leave, which is a real sad thing because then we have another issue we have to deal with down the road," the governor added.
LePage’s racially charged comments didn’t "change a bit for me my affection for him, as a leader and as a person, and he's a good man," presidential hopeful Republican Gov. Chris Christie of New Jersey said on MSNBC's "Morning Joe," according to Politico.
"We all know that he shoots from the hip, and when he does that there are going to be times when even he, in retrospect, thinks he shouldn't have said," Christie added.
LePage later apologized for the remarks.
“I was going impromptu, and my brain didn’t catch up to my mouth,” LePage said, according to MSNBC. “Instead of Maine women, I said white women … If you go to Maine, you can see it’s 95 percent white.”
