Maggie Hollifield, 10, Shot Dead by 14-Year-Old Boy in Accident

Police are investigating the shooting and subsequent death of a 10-year-old girl outside her home in Virginia.

They refuse to release any details about the shooting, but local reports indicate that it was done by a 14-year-old boy and is thought to have been an accident.

Maggie Hollifield is the daughter of a pastor, and was standing outside her father's home in Crozet Tuesday morning when she was fatally shot.

There is no information about what type of gun the boy used or how he got ahold of it.

On Thursday, the police department sent out an update from the Medical Examiner's Office, saying that the girl's death is "accidental in nature."

Public Information Officer Carter Johnson told MailOnline that they plan to meet with a lawyer of the family's church to discuss what information can be released to the public without interfering with the investigation.

"We want to make sure we do our part to do due diligence," Carter said.

The girl's stepfather was Paul E. Hollifield. He worked as a pastor at Commonwealth Christian Community Church since September.

The church has asked for prayers and comfort for them instead of flowers, according to a Facebook post. They have also asked for donations to be made to a fund set up for a children's youth camp, one of Maggie's favorite activities.

Maggie was the sister of two girls and a boy. The family of six just moved into the neighborhood last year.

"I believe they got here around eight or nine months ago. I think, not long before Christmas last year," neighbor Susan Coleman said.

"I met the kids and would see them out there playing, four kids riding their bikes."

Coleman said the neighborhood is close-knit, and the recent tragedy has deeply upset the community.
