Luis Torres was arrested after allegedly shooting his young grandchild at around 10 p.m. on Tuesday during an argument with another family member in Gwinnett County, Georgia.
“At this time, we don’t think he intended to actually shoot that child, but we do believe he was trying to shoot someone else that was here," Gwinnett County Police Cpl. Jake Smith told The Atlanta Journal-Constitution.
Torres said that he was arguing with the boy's father, Rochell McCoy.
“I was arguing with him and him with me. And he threw me to the floor and pushed me and hit me. I love my family, but I lost everything," Torres told Channel 2 Action News (video below).
When police arrived at the home, they found Deandre Vega laying on the driveway. Vega was taken to a local hospital, but died.
Conflicting news reports say Vega was 3 years old or 23 months old.
Torres was charged with murder and aggravated assault. He is being held without bond at the Gwinnett County Jail.
