Louisiana Teenager Struck By Train In Bizarre Railroad Accident

A Louisiana teenager died tragically while playing a game with his friends on train tracks over the weekend.

Two years ago, Brandt Torres made a miraculous recovery from a near-fatal hunting accident when he stood up in the path of another duck hunter. “He was critically injured to the point they didn’t know if he could make it,” said sheriff’s spokesman Steven Juge. “... his recovery was close to a miracle.”

At 1:30 a.m. on Sunday, law enforcement officials said that Torres was struck by a train just south of a Union Pacific rail yard in Livonia and died.

The 17-year-old was placing coins onto the train tracks with friends to watch them get crushed by passing trains. A ladder hanging off of one of the passing train cars caught Torres and swept him underneath the train, authorities said.

“It’s always a tragedy when an officer responds to a scene where a child has been injured or deceased," Juge said. “It’s always a hard thing for those officers to get over, like any human being would (when) answering those types of calls.”

The fatal incident came on the eve of the second anniversary of Torres’s hunting accident. Pointe Coupee Parish Sheriff Bud Torres III, a family member of Brandt, said it was a “tragedy.”

“He had some challenges along the way, and now this happens,” Bud told The Advocate. “It’s just sad.”
