A Los Angeles police officer faces multiple assault charges after he allegedly set his girlfriend’s hair on fire and broke her nose.
Alejandro Flores, 33, was detained after the unnamed woman reported the alleged assault to relatives on June 29. He has been charged with three counts of domestic battery, two counts of assault likely to cause great bodily injury, aggravated assault, dissuading a witness and false imprisonment.
According to police, the abuse had been going on for months but became even worse on June 28, when Flores and the woman allegedly argued about their child’s pacifier.
After striking his girlfriend with his fist, Flores reportedly threw her against a wall and grabbed her neck, KTLA reports. He then dragged her to the kitchen and held her head above a burning gas stove. Her hair caught fire and was extinguished.
To keep the woman’s screams from being heard, Flores allegedly turned up the volume on the television. He then retrieved his off-duty weapon from the bedroom and threatened the woman with violence if she informed the police about the incident.
The woman was able to leave with the child the next day when Flores left for work. She informed two relatives who called the police, the Los Angeles Times reported.
According to the Orange County District Attorney’s Office, a previous assault occurred on Oct. 22, 2014, when Flores hit the woman in the face, breaking her nose. The alleged assault was not reported at the time.
Sheriff’s Department spokeswoman Amber Smith told the LA Times that Flores had been relieved of his duties and placed on administrative leave.
Flores has been released from custody on $50,000 bail. If he is found guilty of the charges, he could go to prison for a maximum of 25 years and eight months.
