Police have arrested a 25-year-old man after he reportedly beheaded a woman with a machete in a residential north London area.
The attack is said to have happened in the afternoon in Edmonton, where special forces were called to the scene when the unidentified man attacked either a dog or a cat with a knife, according to the Daily Mail.
In the backyard of a nearby house, police discovered a woman dead. More officers were deployed to the scene, where they cornered and used tasers to subdue the suspect and brought him into custody on suspicion of murder.
“There were a number of people [present]. What we do know is that this male has gone along a number of the back gardens of this premises,” said Metropolitan Police Commander Simon Letchford. “Officers who attended the scene have evacuated a number of those people from those premises to make them safe. During that period they distracted the man from carrying out any further attacks.”
The suspect is currently receiving medical attention for injuries sustained during the arrest.
Letchford said that the man’s motive for reportedly killing a woman and attacking an animal are still unclear.
“Whilst it is too early to speculate on what the motive behind this attack was I am confident, based on the information currently available to me, that it is not terrorist related,” said John Sandlin, a detective leading the investigation. “Local officers and specialist detectives are at the scene and will remain there for many hours to come. Specially trained family liaison officers will be deployed to support the family; we request that their privacy is respected at this very difficult time.”
According to Sky News, other residents had to flee the scene to avoid being attacked. Witnesses have also reported seeing the attacker in the area killing cats.
In the house where the woman was beheaded, two young children were reportedly evacuated by police as they cried and screamed, said taxi firm manager and resident Kharul Islam.
“When the police arrived there was a lot of panic and they were trying to get through the windows on the ground floor,” he said. “They were talking to the family inside. I saw two kids being held out of the window, I think they were boys by a woman. She looked like their mother and was older than the guy arrested. Then the police smashed their way into the house.”
Police are still investigating the incident and will reportedly release further details when possible.
