Lion Burgers Becoming Popular in U.S.

Most people have heard of turkey burgers or tofu burgers, but lion burgers?

Surprisingly, it is legal to sell lion meat in the U.S. and more restaurants are serving up the big cat on a sesame seed bun.

The lion meat comes from captive lions bred in the U.S. as well as circuses.

Lion burgers first appeared in a Mesa, Arizona restaurant in 2010 in honor of the South African Football World Cup, reported CNN.

Lion meat has recently been sold in tacos in Florida and on meat skewers in Burlingame, California.

"Game meat, including lion meat, can be sold as long as the animal from which it is derived is not on the endangered species list,” Shelly Burgess, of the Food and Drug Administration, told The Guardian.

However, there are only about 30,000 lions left in Africa, where they are routinely killed for their bones, heads and carcasses. The dead lions are sold around the world as trophies and special "healing" food.

Illinois State Rep. Luis Arroyo has proposed a bill that would ban any person to slaughter a lion or for any person to posses, breed, import or export from the state, or buy or sell lions for the purpose of slaughter, noted CBS Chicago.
