Lessons on Deadly Drug Abuse Via the Anna Nicole Smith Case

The bunny’s back in the news. A series of hearings on the death of former Playboy Playmate Anna Nicole Smith are scheduled to begin next week with the questioning of her former doctors -- Sandeep Kapoor and Khristine Eroshevich -- and former lawyer-turned-boyfriend Howard K. Stern.

Much is at stake for these members of the starlet’s entourage. Both physicians and Stern will stand before a Los Angeles Superior Court judge with the power to determine whether or not each will go to trial for their alleged contribution to Smith’s lethal overdose on prescription drugs.

The buzz around these upcoming Hollywood courtroom scenes along with news coverage of other recent drug-induced deaths of high profile celebrities like Heath Ledger, Michael Jackson, and DJ AM have drawn America’s attention to a long-overlooked yet growing problem: prescription drug abuse.

This problem isn’t exclusive to the red carpet crowd; instead, it touches millions of average people and is often facilitated by trusted medical doctors and loved ones of the abuser. In a new video, Dr. Michelle Golland urges for offenders to be prosecuted and comments on the seriousness of this issue:
