Leonard Smith, 11, Shot and Killed by 6-Year-Old Relative (Video)

Leonard Smith, 11, was reportedly shot in the head by a 6-year-old relative in Belleville, Illinois on Tuesday night.

According to the police report, the children were upstairs during a family gathering downstairs. The 6-year-old boy found a handgun that did not have a safety and shot Smith (pictured).

Smith was taken to Belleville Memorial Hospital and was later pronounced dead, notes KSDK-TV (video below).

The two boys are believed to be related. The gun was apparently being stored in the home for another family member who did not live there.

“At this point in time we won’t be applying for charges on the 6-year-old,” Belleville Police Department Detective Mark Heffernan told Fox 2 Now. “We believe that this is just a tragic circumstance that these kids located this firearm and it had a deadly result.”

The St. Clair County State’s Attorney will review the case before considering other possible charges.

According to the FBI:

In 2010, in incidents of murder for which the relationships of murder victims and offenders were known, 53.0 percent were killed by someone they knew (acquaintance, neighbor, friend, boyfriend, etc.); 24.8 percent of victims were slain by family members. The relationship of murder victims and offenders was unknown in 44.0 percent of murder and non-negligent manslaughter incidents in 2010.
