A leaked video shows MSNBC host Lawrence O'Donnell having a profanity-laden meltdown.
It occurred during the Aug. 29 recording of "The Last Word with Lawrence O'Donnell," as the host became increasingly angry over studio noise, reports the Daily Mail.
After the eight-minute clip was obtained by the website Mediaite, O'Donnell posted an apology to Twitter. "A better anchorman and a better person would've had a better reaction to technical difficulties," he tweeted. "I'm sorry."
The video begins with the usual segue from "The Rachel Maddow Show" to O'Donnell's show.
"Thank you, Rachel," O'Donnell began, before launching into a his first story. "Well, today, President Trump visited Texas, but he forgot to bring any empathy with him. But he did bring a hat. A hat that is for sale."
But then O'Donnell began picking up studio noise in his earpiece, causing him to launch into a rant.
"What's going on? Why am I losing this? Why don't I have sound? Alright, it's back. Someone's pressing buttons and turning my sound off. Who's asking for a Labor Day rundown in my ear? Someone in that control room is out of control."
After a couple of choice profanities, O'Donnell is seen slamming his fist on the table before resuming his Trump story. But he didn't get far before declaring, "There's insanity in the control room tonight."
A bit later in the recording, he is seen complaining about "insanity" in his earpiece. When a staffer attempts to replace the earpiece, O'Donnell says: "It's not my earpiece. It's somebody talking on our lines. F**k."
Shortly after, he says, "[T]here's a woman talking in my ear about something that has nothing to do with what we're doing here."
After getting into a different story, thumping noises are heard in the background, prompting an angry O'Donnell to get up out of his chair and yell: "Stop the hammering! Stop the hammering up there. Who's got a hammer? Where is it? Where's the hammer? Go up on the other floor. Somebody go up there and stop the hammering. Stop the hammering … I'll go down to the god***ned floor myself and stop it, keep the god***ned commercial break going.
Then he tells his staff to get MSNBC President Phil Griffin on the phone.
"Call f**king Phil Griffin, I don't care who the f**k you have to call. Stop the hammering. Empty out the god***ned control room and find out where this is going on. It's either there or there. Or out there somewhere."
The hammering continued after he transitioned to a story about the man who beat out Joe Arpaio to become the new sheriff of Maricopa County.
After throwing a small object to the ground, O'Donnell took up where he left off: "Jesus Christ. Crazy f**king sound coming in my ear. This f**king stupid hammering."
He then launched into a tirade about editing.
"I told you why I wanted those f**king words cut. It just f**king sucks. It f**king sucks to be out here with this out-of-control s**t."
O'Donnell's barrage of expletives recalls the time Kasey Kasem was caught spewing obscenities during the taping of his "American Top 40" radio program, as recalled by The Daily Beast.
It occurred as Kasem attempted to read a listener's letter as part of the show's "Long Distance Dedication" segment. "Recently there was a death in our family," the letter began. "He was a little dog named Snuggles."
As Kasem was reading the letter, he became furious at his staff about the background music that was accompanying his narration. "I want a g*****n concerted effort to come out of a record that isn't a f**king uptempo record every time I gotta do a g*****n death dedication," he yelled, while repeating the phrase "f**king dead dog" numerous times.
