Daughter Of IL State Rep Attacks Her Mother's Opponent

The daughter of Democratic State Rep. Cynthia Soto of Illinois and a fellow campaign volunteer allegedly attacked the legislator’s political opponent, Robert Zwolinski.

Jessica Soto and Bradley Fichter, both 26, are accused of assaulting 30-year-old Zwolinski near his campaign office, ABC 7 Chicago reports.

According to Zwolinski, Jessica and Fichter were putting up signs when he got out of his car, exchanged words with them and then removed the signs.

Fichter then allegedly punched Zwolinski while Jessica squeezed his genitals, used a staple gun on his forehead, kicked him and hit him with a bottle.

"She really just started going after me on my back right shoulder, aggressively,"  Zwolinkski said. "That turned him immediately into just punching, punching, punching, punching, punching."

A staple punctured Zwolinski’s head and he suffered a broken nose.

“Politics is a contact sport. Apparently that’s literally the case," Zwolinski tweeted with a photo of his bloodied face.

Jessica and Fichter have both been charged with three felony counts: aggravated battery with a deadly weapon, aggravated battery causing great bodily harm and aggravated battery in a public place.

Their attorney, Frank Avila, claims they are innocent and that it was Zwolinski who started the fight, WLS reports.

Mr. Zwolinski was the aggressor. I'm not sure why police aren't asking why Mr. Zwolinski got out of the car. And Jessica Soto was not in the altercation. This is politics at its finest. Even though the mother is a state representative, they're harming her because she is an elected official and she won. This is a disgrace. This is a tragedy, and we'll make sure we get these charges dropped.

Zwolinski was defeated by Cynthia Soto in the state’s primary but plans to run for her seat again.
