A Las Vegas cab driver found $300,000 in the backseat of his taxi on Monday, and returned the money.
Gerardo Gamboa was making a morning pickup at the Bellagio hotel when the doorman handed him a brown paper bag that had been left in the taxi's backseat. He placed it on the front seat next to him and continued on with his current fare.
Gamboa thought the brown paper bag held a box of chocolates, but his curiosity got the better of him and he looked inside. He found six bundles of $100 bills totaling $300,000, reports the Las Vegas Review Journal.
In an interview with the Las Vegas Review Journal Gamboa said his initial reaction was, “My God, this is cash money."
The found money was immediately called in to dispatch and after Gamboa dropped off his current passenger he went straight to the Checker Cab head office, the Daily Mail reports.
A little police detective work later between the Las Vegas police, casino officials, and the cab company led to finding the owner of the $300,000. He is a well-known poker player whose name has not been released, reports the Las Vegas Review Journal.
Yellow Checker Star chief operating officer Bill Shranko told the Las Vegas Review Journal, "This is the largest amount we have found in my 32 years in this business."
The Daily Mail states Gamboa did not think twice about returning the money to its rightful owner. "Even though I am a poor guy I don’t need money that doesn’t belong to me," he said. "Tomorrow, I go back to work."
